Our Mission & Vision

St James’s Pre-school is a sought-after pre-school in the heart of Beckenham, that has been established for over 30 years and has continued to grow and prosper into a secure, safe and stimulating environment for children aged 2-5.

In our setting, children are valued as unique individuals and are able to access the EYFS through a variety of fun and engaging activities, with the support of our dedicated and highly qualified team of practitioners.

Interacting and learning to socialise in a place where they have empowerment over their environment, we promote an atmosphere of mutual respect and encouragement, where the children are prepared for their next steps in learning.

One of our main emphasis is learning through play, we feel it is very important to a

child’s development, it is an integral part of a child’s Early Years Foundation Stage and

supports their learning journey too. Young children can develop many skills through the

power of play. They may develop their language skills, emotions, creativity and social

skills.

A day at St James’s

The children arrive ready to start pre-school at 9am, they have a little time to settle in and to wait for their friends to arrive before we have a circle time to welcome everyone to the session. We have 3 groups for the circle times depending on each child’s age and development – Caterpillars, Red Butterflies and Butterflies. During these circle times the children sing songs, read stories, share their important news or discuss topical themes as well as learning some basic phonic and maths skills.

Once circle times have ended, the children are then able to go into ‘free play’. During this time, they are able to access all of the activities we have on offer within the session, as well as go into one of our 2 gardens and enjoy the activities we have on offer out there. Throughout the session we have adult-led focus activities, as well as two physical times – the children choose which physical time they would like to join as part of their independent learning.

Every morning the children have snack time from 10am. For snack, the children have access to 3 different types of fruit or vegetables and either bread, bread sticks or
pitta bread. With support, the children self-select the snack that they would like and
are supported in pouring their own drinks – independence is key!

All of our activities are planned for the children by their key person and we ensure that all 7 areas of the curriculum are covered in each session. We have self-selection construction, arts and crafts and maths equipment as well as having these topics incorporated into adult-led activities.

We encourage the children to mark-make as much as possible, we have clipboards for mark-making on the go, pads and paper and writing tables. We also use messy play as a great way to mark-make, for example shaving foam, oats, moon sand, cornflour – the list is endless!

Communication and language are such an important part of a young child’s development, which is why we have book corners both inside and outside. We also ensure that all of our activities encourage communication and language and we have our pre-school library, where once a week children come into our ‘library’ and spend time independently choosing a book to take home to read.

As the morning session comes to a close, the children come together in their circle times for a story. The children going home will go into our Caterpillar hall to get their coats on and say goodbye and the children staying for lunch will wash their hands and get ready for their packed lunches (provided from home). Once lunch time finishes, we have another circle time to welcome the afternoon children that have arrived and to talk through the afternoon activities. The afternoon session comes to a close at 3.10-3.15pm depending on whether you are accessing our free entitlement only sessions.
